Friday – The Text That Changed Everything

Have you ever noticed how a simple text message can arrive at exactly the moment you need it? Last week, I returned to work after a fortnight’s holiday and was facing a full email inbox and a long task list when a friend messaged us out of the blue: " Hope you both have a good day!" It was a promising start to the day!

That's the power of encouragement. It costs so little but means so much.

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25

The writer of Hebrews links two things we might not naturally connect: gathering together and encouragement. But they're inseparable, really. We can't encourage people we never see. We can't strengthen faith we never witness.

When we allow ourselves to drift from regular fellowship because we’re too busy or too tired or have too many other commitments our faith suffers for it. Not just because we miss the teaching or the worship, but because we miss the encouragement. The knowing glances. The shared struggles. The "me too" moments that remind us we're not alone.

Encouragement isn't just saying nice things. It's showing up when someone's in hospital. It's remembering their job interview and asking how it went. It's noticing when they're missing and checking in. It's speaking truth when they're believing lies about themselves.

The early church understood this ministry of presence. They met in homes. They shared meals. They carried each other's burdens. They knew that following Jesus was too hard to do alone.

Prayer: Lord, help us to be faithful encouragers. Show us who needs a word, a call, or simply our presence today. Amen.
