Wednesday – Grace Shows Up in Strange Packages

Have you ever received a gift so unexpected that it took your breath away? A few years ago, Gabriel Hurles turned six. What does a six-year-old want for his birthday? I would imagine things like Lego, a bicycle, Thomas the Tank Engine, or perhaps a DVD of a recent film he’s been watching on repeat. Gabriel was so focused on eating his birthday cake, that he failed to notice the large, unexpected package in the corner of the room. Once it was pointed out to him, he ran over to it and started to tear off the wrapping. It wasn’t bicycle or anything else a six-year-old might have had on his birthday list. Inside was his dad, Army Specialist Casey Hurles, home on leave from the war in Iraq. Gabriel and his father had spent the past seven months apart. What an unexpected gift!

God specialises in unexpected gifts of grace.

So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham’s. Romans 4:16

David’s story (in 2 Samuel 12) reminds us that grace often arrives wrapped in surprising packages. After the devastating loss of his child, after the weight of his own failures, God gave David and Bathsheba another son. They named him Solomon – meaning peace and prosperity. But God added his own name through Nathan the prophet: Jedidiah, beloved of the Lord.

Just think about that! In their darkest valley, when guilt and grief could have consumed them, God sent a message: “You are still beloved. This child is beloved. My grace is bigger than your failures”.

I’ve noticed something over the years. God’s grace rarely arrives as we expect. Sometimes it’s a friend’s unexpected text. Sometimes it’s a new opportunity after redundancy. Sometimes it’s peace in the middle of chaos. But it always whispers the same truth: this isn’t the end of your story.

Even in our deepest pits, God is already planning resurrection moments.

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to see the unexpected gifts of grace you’re placing in our path today. Help us receive them. Amen.

Reflection Question: What unexpected reminder of God’s grace have you overlooked recently?
