Saturday – Belong Before You Believe: How to Create a Church Where Everyone Feels at Home

Have you ever walked into a room full of strangers and felt instantly at home? It’s rare, isn’t it? More often, if you’re anything like me, we hover near the door, clutching our coffee like a lifeline, wondering if anyone will notice us. Now imagine that feeling, but it’s your first time at a Salvation Army corps church. You’re not just socially anxious – you’re spiritually vulnerable, possibly desperate, maybe even giving God one last chance.

When I was younger, I didn’t visit many Salvation Army corps outside of my home corps. But one we did visit on a regular basis, particularly in the summer, was Sheringham Corps on the North Norfolk coast. Although we were often out of uniform, the corps welcomed us in and made us feel at home. But one thing I distinctly remember, over thirty years later, is their visitors book. It wasn’t just to record messages. The corps pledged to pray for their visitors and to send them a card to say when they did so. What a beautiful way to accept visitors!

Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory. Romans 15:7

Paul’s instruction is simple but revolutionary: accept others the way Christ accepted you. How did Christ accept us? While we were still sinners. In our mess. Without requiring us to clean up first or learn the lingo or know when to stand and sit.

Now of course, as a Salvation Army officer, I am required to move corps on a regular basis. And I am always grateful to those in those corps who point out the coffee, introduce me to people, and try to make me feel at home as soon as possible.

Creating a culture of belonging goes far beyond a visitor’s book. It requires:

Intentional noticing. Some people have a gift for spotting newcomers. But this isn’t supernatural – it’s simply paying attention. Who’s sitting alone? Who looks lost? Who’s hovering by the door?

Personal investment. It’s easier to point to the coffee than to walk someone there. It’s easier to hand out information than to be the information. But belonging happens through relationship, not programmes.

Ongoing connection. Don’t just welcome people once. Check in with them week after week, remember their names, ask about their life. Made sure they move from visitor to family.

Genuine inclusion. Don’t just tolerate newcomers but actively include them. Explain inside jokes. Translate those frustrating church acronyms. Make space at established tables.

Creating belonging costs us something. It costs us our comfort. It costs us our established patterns. It costs us our closed circles. But when we remember how desperately we needed to belong, how God made space for us at his table when we deserved nothing, how can we not do the same?

A corps or church that creates true belonging doesn’t need clever marketing or flashy programmes. Word spreads: “That’s the place where you matter. That’s the place where you’re known. That’s the place where you belong before you believe”.

Prayer: Father, help us remember what it felt like to be outsiders, and let that memory make us radically welcoming. Give us eyes to see the lonely, courage to cross the room, and persistence to move people from attendance to belonging. Amen.
