Welcome back. It's good to see you when crisis strikes. Where do you instinctively turn? Let me tell you about something that happened in May 2024, in the English town of Hastings. A burst water main left 35,000 people without running water for six days. Just think about that for a moment. No washing up, no flushing toilets, no normal life.

At least in the Western world. You'd expect chaos, wouldn't you? But something beautiful emerged instead. Neighbors who'd never spoken became lifelines to each other. Volunteers mobilized through organizations like Hastings Heart. Community support systems activated with remarkable efficiency. It's a powerful reminder that help is often closer than we think. And that includes divine help. Our Scripture today comes from acts chapter 17, verse 27.

His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way towards him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. Paul's words to the Athenians reveal something profound about God's closeness. He's not a distant deity who occasionally intervenes from afar. He's Emmanuel, God with us, especially in our darkest moments.

But here's what we often miss. God's closeness in crisis doesn't always look like dramatic intervention. Sometimes it looks like the neighbor who brings you bottled water when the mains burst. Sometimes it's the friend who texted it at exactly the right moment. Sometimes it's the stranger who offers practical help when you're overwhelmed. We often mistakenly assume that God's nearness should be measurable by our feelings or visible in our circumstances.

Yet his presence transcends our ability to sense it. Remaining steadfast through seasons of confusion, pain, and uncertainty. During the Hastings crisis, residents discovered that support was literally next door. People they passed by daily without acknowledgment suddenly became sources of hope and practical assistance. And that's often how God draws near in our personal crises, through the compassionate actions of people who become his hands and his feet.

In our situation. Think about it. When Jesus walked this earth. How did he typically minister to people? He touched them. He spoke to them. He shared meals with them. He was physically, tangibly present. And today he continues that same ministry through his body, the church, through believers who choose to embody his love. God's nearness is often demonstrated through the compassionate response of his people becoming tangible through human kindness and practical service.

When we receive unexpected help, genuine listening, or simple friendship during tough times, we were experiencing God's nearness, made flesh through his human servant's. Crisis can also become an opportunity for deeper spiritual awareness. Stripping away our superficial concerns to reveal what truly matters, the urgency of crisis can sharpen our spiritual sensitivity, making us more aware of God's presence than we might be during ordinary times.

Facing crisis. As we close today, reflect on these questions. When have you experienced God's closeness through other people during challenging times? And how can you become an expression of God's nearness to someone struggling today? Let's pray. Lord, thank you that you are not far from any of us. Help us to recognize your presence in the compassionate actions of those around us, and help us to be your hands and feet to others who are struggling.
