Your Past Doesn’t Define You - God Does

Rob Westwood-Payne Season 2025 Episode 283

Your past doesn’t define you - God does. In this Battle Drill Daily Devotional, we explore how God gives you a new name, a new identity, and a new life. So many of us feel stuck in old patterns, haunted by past mistakes, or exhausted by habits we can’t break. But the Bible reminds us that real transformation isn’t something we manufacture. It comes from God himself.

Genesis 32:28 (NLT) tells Jacob’s story: “Your name will no longer be Jacob… From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.” Jacob moved from deceiver to Israel. God renamed him and gave him a brand-new identity. The same promise is available to us in Christ. Philippians 1:6 (NLT) assures us: “God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished.”

👉 In this short Christian devotional you’ll discover:

  • Why your past does not define your future
  • How God gives you a new name and a new identity in Christ
  • Why conversion is God’s promise, not your project
  • How to hold on to God’s blessing even in struggle

This video is perfect for Christians seeking daily encouragement, simple Bible application, and short sermon-style teaching, as well as seekers curious about what the Bible says about change, forgiveness, and new life in Christ.

Let me ask you:

have you ever wanted to change but felt stuck in the same old patterns? Maybe you’ve promised yourself a fresh start, but the same mistakes circle back. It can feel exhausting, like you’ll never break free. But here’s the hope: real transformation isn’t something you have to manufacture. The Bible says true change comes from God himself. Hi, and welcome to the Battle Drill Daily Devotional. I’m Rob Westwood-Payne. The story of Jacob shows us this so clearly. His very name meant “deceiver.” His life was marked by trickery, by conflict, and by running from all of the fallout of his choices. Maybe that resonates with you. You’ve tried to manage your own mess, but the weight of your habits and your hang-ups keeps dragging you back. You start to wonder if God really could give you a clean start. Genesis chapter 32, verse

28 records a turning point:

“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him.“From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men, and have won.” In that moment, Jacob moved from deceiver to Israel. God gave him a new name, and with it a new life. That’s what the gospel means by conversion. Conversion is what God does in a sinner’s life. It’s not just about believing the right things—it’s about God doing something new inside you. He gives you a new story, a new hope, and a new identity. Philippians chapter 1, verse 6 says: “I am certain that God, who began a good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” So here’s the

promise:

the same God who began his work in you will not stop until it’s complete. You may feel unfinished, but he is faithful. He doesn’t abandon the project of your life. Now here’s the truth that’s harder to hear: sometimes that transformation is slow. Old chains don’t fall away overnight. Jacob carried a limp for the rest of his life—a reminder that strength came from God, not from himself. And if we’re honest, we carry scars too. We are forgiven, but God keeps chipping away at the habits that hold us back.

And here’s the paradox:

those struggles don’t disqualify you—they shape you. That limp, that scar, that ongoing battle becomes the reminder that your hope doesn’t rest in willpower, but in grace. So what’s our part in all of this? It’s to hold on. Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” That’s our prayer too. When you feel like giving up, keep clinging on. When old patterns return, keep trusting God. When you feel stuck,

whisper again:

“Lord, I trust your promise. I believe that you’re not finished with me yet.” You see, conversion is not your project—it’s God’s promise. He who began the work will see it through. And the payoff? It’s freedom—not the false freedom of doing whatever you want, but the real freedom of becoming who you were made to be. God names you. God loves you. God shapes you. He is turning you into his masterpiece. And nothing—not your past, not your limp, not even your present struggle—can stop his work. Remember this, my friend:

God gives you a new name, a new identity, and a new life. He who began the work in you will never give up. So stay strong, stay surrendered, and stay battle ready.
