When Good Things Start Taking Over Your Life
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Sometimes the things that crowd our lives are not bad things.
They may be useful, enjoyable, or even good. The problem comes when something begins to take more from us than it gives. A phone becomes the first thing we reach for. A full diary leaves no room to breathe. A hobby, possession, routine, or commitment starts to shape our choices more than we realise.
That is why Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 6:12 are so searching. He says he will not allow himself to become a slave to anything.
The question is not simply, “Am I allowed to do this?” A better question may be, “Is this beginning to control me?”
That shifts the conversation from rules to freedom.
Jesus does not call us into a cramped life where every pleasure is treated with suspicion. He invites us into a life where good things stay in their proper place. We can enjoy them without needing them to tell us who we are or how we should live.
Perhaps today you could notice one thing that has quietly taken up too much room. It might be your phone, your work, an overfilled diary, a possession, or even the pressure to keep everyone happy.
You do not need to make a dramatic change. Begin small.
Turn off one notification. Leave twenty minutes empty. Give away one unused thing. Say no to one unnecessary demand.
Then notice what happens in the space you have made.
Maybe you will hear your own thoughts more clearly. Perhaps you will notice someone who needs you. And perhaps, in that little bit of quiet, you will become more aware of God’s presence.
Freedom often begins with simply noticing what has become too important.
And choosing a little space again.
